Mr Gurdeep Singh Biring
Mr Gurdeep Biring is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon based at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (BHT) where he has worked since 2007. He is Arthroplasty Lead at BHT and the Director of the Hip2kneeclinic and operates his private practice from the BMI - Chiltern & Shelburne Hospitals. He specialises in Lower Limb Reconstructive Hip and Knee Surgery and is fellowship trained in all contemporary techniques with a particular interest in hip and knee arthroscopy, primary hip/knee joint replacement, hip resurfacing, revision joint replacement surgery, sports injuries and minimally invasive joint replacement surgery.
Mr Biring studied medicine at Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School, University of London and trained in Trauma & Orthopaedics on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Rotation (Stanmore), where he developed a keen interest in lower limb arthroplasty surgery. This interest resulted in him giving academic research presentations, and releasing publications for the treatment of patients receiving joint replacement. He completed a Master of Science Degree in Orthopaedic Engineering with Distinction in 2003. After successfully completing the FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedic) Intercollegiate Specialty Board Examination in 2004, he was awarded a Royal College of Surgeons of England Surgical Research Grant to pursue a Specialist Fellowship in Hip and Knee Reconstruction at the world renowned Vancouver General & Health Sciences Centre in 2005-6. Other awards have included The British Hip Society 2007 European Travelling Fellowship to the EndoKlinik, and a Hip Arthroscopy Travelling Fellowship in the world famous Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado with Marc Philippon. In 2010, he was awarded the Davenport Research Award from Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust to study the treatment Femoro-acetabular Impingement.
Mr Biring offers a comprehensive understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic conditions affecting the lower limb such as sports injuries and arthritis. He continues to perform research in the field of hip & knee surgery and maintains strong academic links with North America, Europe and Bucks New University. His aim is to provide a caring patient centred approach with prompt diagnosis and rapid rehabilitation and enhanced recovery utilizing contemporary joint restoration and replacement techniques. Mr Biring is honoured to be an integral part of the Buckinghamshire Hospitals Orthopaedic Service and is committed to further improving this acclaimed programme.
During his spare time, Mr Gurdeep Biring enjoys spending time with his wife and three sons. His interests include golf, cricket, travel and comedy.

I was a Fellow in the Division of Lower Limb Reconstruction in the Department of Orthopaedics at Vancouver General and Health Sciences Centre, University of British Columbia, Canada. The unit is the regional referral hip and knee reconstruction unit with vast experience in complex revision hip, knee arthroplasties and surgical management of the young arthritic hip and knee. The unit is well known for developing, amongst others, the Vancouver periprosthetic fracture classification and the PROSTALAC system for infected revision arthroplasty.
The fellowship operative experience included all aspect of arthroplasty surgery. There was extensive exposure to routine and complex revision hip and knee replacements. Novel techniques such as the use of Trabecular Metal implants and augments are used and evaluated prospectively. Mega prostheses are implanted in patients with previous multiple revision surgery or periprosthetic fractures with severe bone loss. Resurfacing hip arthroplasty, metal-on-metal hip replacements and minimally invasive surgery (MIS) are performed as part of ongoing clinical trials. The fellowship was tailored to provide maximum supervised operating opportunities for the Fellow. I have performed 450 arthroplasty cases in Vancouver with 100 revision hip arthroplasty cases, 60 revision knee cases with the remainder being primary hip and knee cases using minimally invasive approaches. I was involved in several research projects, which will lead to peer-reviewed publications.

MSc Orthopaedic Engineering Dissertation
- The Centre of Biomedical Engineering, Institute of Orthopaedic & Musculo-Skeletal Science, University College London
I investigated the head/neck interface of modular total hip replacements to see whether the use of small spigots (minispigots) resulted in enhanced wear and corrosion, and if this was influenced by the surface finish on these tapers. Wear and corrosion of spigots were compared in-vitro using a test based on the resultant force through the femoral head. The surface parameters & profiles were measured before & after testing along with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical static and dynamic corrosion (pitting) tests were performed on minispigots under loaded and non-loaded conditions. In the CoCrMo/ Ti combinations, wear and corrosion was increased in minispigots compared with standard spigots. Surface finish was crucial and corrosion of the minispigot was reduced if the surface finish was smooth. I was a awarded a ‘Distinction’ for the dissertation.
